Their daughter Jessica, born in 1971, also went on to become an artist. He is of Danish descent through his mother. Early life Īlbarn was born on 23 March 1968 he is the elder child of artist Keith Albarn and his wife Hazel, née Dring. In 2020, Albarn was granted Icelandic citizenship. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to music. In 2016, Albarn received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. In 2008, The Daily Telegraph named Albarn the 18th-most powerful person in British culture. His debut solo album, Everyday Robots, was released in 2014, followed by The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows in 2021. Albarn also scored the stage productions Monkey: Journey to the West (2008), Dr Dee (2012) and Wonder.land (2016). He co-founded the non-profit musical organisation Africa Express and has composed film soundtracks. His other notable projects include the supergroups the Good, the Bad & the Queen and Rocket Juice & the Moon. Albarn remains the group's only consistent musical contributor. Drawing influences from hip hop, dub, pop, trip hop and world music, Gorillaz released their self-titled debut album in 2001 to worldwide success, spawning numerous successful follow-ups and continuing to release albums and tour into the 2020s. These were followed by The Magic Whip (2015), Blur's first studio album in 12 years.Īlbarn formed the virtual band Gorillaz in 1998 with the comic book artist Jamie Hewlett. Albums such as Blur (1997), 13 (1999) and Think Tank (2003) incorporated influences from lo-fi, art rock, electronic and world music. All three received critical acclaim, while Blur gained mass popularity in the UK, aided by a Britpop chart rivalry with Oasis. The result was the Blur albums Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995). After spending long periods touring the US, Albarn's songwriting became increasingly influenced by British bands from the 1960s. They released their debut album Leisure in 1991. Raised in Leytonstone, East London, and around Colchester, Essex, Albarn attended the Stanway School, where he met the guitarist Graham Coxon and formed Blur. He is the frontman of the rock band Blur and the co-creator and primary musical contributor of the virtual band Gorillaz. Only certain types of welder’s glass absorb enough light to be used safely for solar viewing – others let in too many harmful UV rays (or just too much light altogether), and some can even provide a too-dim image. Hold the filter/glasses up to the Sun or a bright light and look at the ground to be sure there are no pinholes that can compromise your safety. Unless your solar filter is a solid glass design, it probably uses a thin, Mylar-like safety film. All that was salvageable were the mirrors and a few other parts, and there was a large scorched patch of ground next to where the scope was. I recall a story of a man whose shroud slipped off his 25” (yes, 25”) Dobsonian during a gust of wind and the scope proceeded to ignite both its wooden upper tube assembly as well as the area around it. Going blind is bad enough, but a large Dob could easily start a fire on a sunny, dry day if sunlight strikes the primary mirror, igniting its own wooden components or nearby grass. Don’t use a large Dobsonian telescope for solar observingĪ big Dob not only is pointless for solar observing (daytime seeing always limits a scope above 6-8 inches) it’s also dangerous.Even with a light shroud, all it takes is a slight breeze to potentially let sunlight in to hit the primary or secondary mirror and blind you. This seems obvious, but with the advent of low-cost collapsible-tube reflectors, people seem to be doing solar observing with them more and more. Don’t use truss/collapsible tube telescopes for solar observing.Always make sure your filter is securely attached to your telescopeĮven if sunlight is not directly shining into the objective lens or mirror of your telescope, it can easily bounce off the tube walls and find its way to the eyepiece. I have met folks who have had permanent eye damage from using these devices or ones who walked away from their telescope only to come back and find the filter cracked! Being so close to the focal plane of the telescope they are subjected to an intense, nearly focused pinpoint of light and heat which can crack them (and in turn let the unfiltered sun into your eyes) in under a second. Many older (particularly Japanese-made) refracting and reflecting telescopes come with these, as do (sadly) some cheap department-store telescopes. NEVER use a solar filter that threads onto the eyepiece end of your telescope.Unless you are using a dedicated solar telescope or solar binoculars with a built-in filter, you should always make sure of the following when using your filter on telescopes, spotting scopes, and binoculars. Here is a condensed list of the brands they and others recommend for completely safe solar filters and eclipse shades: The American Astronomical Society and others have a list of approved brands. With that said, let’s first get to some basic safety information and to choosing equipment. However, care should always be taken while observing the sun and solar eclipses. It is no more dangerous than many outdoor activities. This is not to say solar observing should be avoided, however. And even if you think you’re safe from buying the right equipment, there have been numerous cases of fake eclipse glasses sold resulting in permanent eye injuries in 2017and even cases of fake ISO certification labels, meaning the ISO certification can no longer be trusted as the sole guideline to guarantee a safe solar filter or pair of eclipse glasses. Solar observation is the only area of astronomy where a mistake can result in injury or permanent bodily harm. Around the time the game was almost finished, a difficulty level without the time limit was added in-game as the default starting level, which was intended to act as a tutorial. Originally, the game was planned to release without any timed modes, but a time limit feature was added to give the game "an arcade-like feel". Jason Kapalka decided to use simple geometric shapes, but found them to be "boring", until he doodled ideas for playing pieces, a few of them which involved transforming the geometrical shapes to give them a "gem-like appearence", which led to gems being used in the final product. Gems were considered as well, but was rejected after not being able to find interesting variations of gemstones on the internet. Fruits were considered at one point, but was rejected since many fruits "looked too round". The team decided on what objects would be used as the playing pieces. The team decided to give the playing pieces (which were originally squares) unique looks to give them personality, and make the game accessible for colorblind people. The development team disliked the presentation but liked the gameplay, which led them to improve on the game. Diamond Mine was mainly based on Colors Game, a game that involves matching three or more colored boxes, but lacked unique visuals, animation or sound. Only the first seven were used in the final game.ĭevelopment on Diamond Mine began after Sexy Action Cool rebranded to PopCap Games, with the team wanting to make a game that was "simple, web-based, and made in Java". Gem variations that were created during development of Diamond Mine. The Flash version of Diamond Mine simply features a Skill Level 1 game mode with a five minute time limit. These skill levels become the Time Trial mode in Bejeweled. Skill Level 2 is the easy version, where the bar depletes slowly, while it depletes faster in Skill Level 3. If the bonus bar depletes completely, the game ends. When the bonus bar is completely filled, the Bonus effect occurs, and the Bonus bar restarts at half. The bonus bar extends when matches are made. A skull icon is seen at the left side of the Bonus bar. The bonus bar starts at half, and slowly decreases. Skill Level 2 and 3 are timed versions of the game. This skill level becomes the Normal mode in Bejeweled. The game ends when no moves are possible. When it is filled up completely, a Bonus effect occurs, where multiple gems are cleared at once, awarding bonus points. Skill Level 1 is the default and is considered to be the "easy/practice" mode of the game, Matching gems will fill up the bonus bar at the bottom of the screen. The Java version of the game features three modes, labelled under skill levels. When gems disappear, gems fall from above, possibly creating cascades. Clearing four or more gems at once award bonus points. Diamond Mine is a match-3 game that involves matching three or more gems horizontally or vertically. In a Slime Hutch or (less commonly) The Mines, Secret Woods, Skull Cavern, Tiger Slime Grove, or Quarry Mine, male and female slimes may mate to produce a small slime that will grow into either a male or female adult slime. When it is passive and is attacked, male slimes have a 2.5% chance to increase its damage by 50% and do a shaking animation. Male slimes have a pom-pom like antenna dangling above their "heads", 25% more health over the base HP, and 1 more damage. This ring is obtained as a reward for killing 1000 slimes for the Adventurer's Guild.Īny slimes have a 49% chance to be male and will retain its original properties such as being special. The Slime Charmer Ring prevents all damage from Slimes. Timing a block with a sword well can allow the player to get a decent amount of damage. Both the charged and regular attacks may be avoided by using a defensive move (such as the block of the regular sword). The best strategy to kill slimes is to quickly move into striking distance to prevent their charge attack and corner them against a wall or, ideally, in a corner (of walls, rocks, or both). When a slime is hit, it will be knocked back a short distance, out of range of melee weapons. These effects can be prevented by equipping a Slime Charmer Ring. Occasionally slimes will enter a state of rage after being attacked, causing them to move significantly faster and have red eyes.īeing hit by a slime reduces health and may cause the Slimed debuff. If there is an obstacle in the way, the charge jump will cause them to bounce off the object (sometimes multiple times if they're in a tight spot). The charging animation resembles the slime becoming almost flat to the ground. Either they bounce slowly at the player, or they "charge" to jump at the player from a distance. If the player enters this zone, the slime will attack. Slimes spawned by killing a Big Slime do count towards the goal.Įach color of slime has a unique stat set.Īll colors of slimes, both male and female, have an attack zone of 4 tiles in all directions. All Slimes in the game count towards this goal ( e.g., in the Secret Woods) except for Big Slimes and Slimes raised in a Slime Hutch (by means of a Slime Incubator or Mating). You need to kill 1000 Slimes of any color for Monster Eradication Goals. They come in five different variations, all based on the same sprite and code (a color hue is added to the grey sprite found in data files). Slimes are enemies that can be found in various locations, including The Mines and the Secret Woods. I think a lot of it has to do with iOS, where native apps are the default. I am bringing in multiple accounts into one app (personal iCloud and multiple Google Workspace accounts), but another aspect is that I prefer native apps. In the early days of email usage, I preferred using web-based mail, but as time went on, I preferred app-based email. One of the things about my use of email that is most surprising is that I’ve gone in the reverse direction compared to how technology has moved. Over the years, managing multiple Google accounts has become cumbersome. It’s a much smoother solution than running multiple tabs. It’s a native macOS app for Gmail, and it supports G-Suite as well. If you have a few Gmail accounts, and are happy with the Gmail web interface, check out Boxy. I stuck with it during the disaster that was MobileMe and finally arrived at iCloud.īefore I look at the various email apps for Mac, I want to mention one other app that might appeal to Google Workspace and Gmail users. I switched to Gmail in 2004 when it first launched, and I finally switched to Mac in 2005 when I got my first Mac (a Powerbook G4). I switched to Mailblocks around 2002 (it was eventually acquired by AOL). I stuck with AOL until I got an account when my parents first got high-speed Internet. I got my first email account in the mid–90s (When it was still $2.95 per hour for AOL). So what’s the best email app for the Mac? Even with the popularity of web-based services like Gmail, many still prefer a desktop app to pull in multiple email addresses, use desktop plugins, and have a more native Mac experience. Signing up for almost any service on the Internet requires an email address, so it’s a universal digital identifier. Signing into iCloud (and email) is one of my first tasks when setting up a new Mac. Despite all the new messaging services, project management tools, and chat-based ecosystems, email remains essential. Thanks to the wonderful help of Texpad users, Texpad is now localised into languages other than English, with more languages being added This is just the beginning, and soon we'll be adding more languages. Starting from the Welcome window itself, it's all streamlined, distraction-free and automates common tasks accompanied by hotkeys for fast access. We've designed the UI to meet high expectations of Mac users. Now with Texpad switching between multiple distributions is as easy as selecting one from the dropdown list in Preferences. Managing and upgrading LaTeX distributions is often not without pain. Texpad simplifies LaTeX's cryptic error logs by presenting a simple, navigable list of errors that you can jump to, fix, and carry on writing. Texpad ships with a few out-of-the-box (Sweave, ePub publishing, Plain TeX) and you may add your own. tpbuild scripts let you cater for your own special typesetting needs. Texpad keeps your workspace uncluttered by hiding the intermediate files and allows setting various LaTeX and BibTeX options, all through a simple settings interface. LaTeX, pdfLaTeX, Ghostscript, XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX, pLaTeX all work with no configuration. One of Texpad's design principles has been to take the pain out of interacting with your LaTeX distribution. This is particularly useful for large, multi-file projects such as theses, lecture notes and books. The Global Search and Replace feature presents all instances of your search text in the source that you can readily jump to and forth between. Snippets are totally configurable and may be added, deleted and assigned new keys as needed. An example would be selecting a piece of text and pressing Ctrl-Shift-B to put the bold markers around it. In a typical Texpad style of course, they interact smoothly with the editor via hotkeys and are aware of any text that's currently selected. Snippets are little pieces of LaTeX code designed to aid fast editing of documents. In addition to syntax highlighting, you can block comment/un-comment, block indent/un-indent and spell-check as you type. Bundled with Texpad are a number of themes that allow you to change the look of the editor. Texpad's editor is LaTeX and BibTeX aware and highlights your code to make it easy to write it. Never lose track of where you are in a large project by synchronising between the document outline, the editor and the PDF viewer. The outline also lists any TODOs you've entered in the code as reminders, providing quick and easy access to them. These are presented in a customisable outline view to make it as easy as possible to navigate your document. When you open a LaTeX file in Texpad, it will scan through to find all included LaTeX and BibTeX files. Outline view makes Texpad perfect for large documents. Texpad's autocomplete window also acts a quick reference on LaTeX commands, as well as showing you context information on all labels and citation keys. Texpad autocompletes all common TeX commands and autofills \ref and \cite commands with the labels and cite keys defined elsewhere in your document. Use the magic of auto-complete to write faster and with fewer LaTeX errors. Quickly switch to PDF after typesetting lends to a smooth workflow, where the editor and the output work in tandem. Open your recent documents straight from the Texpad Organiser window or create new ones from standard and custom templates. tex file and let Texpad load your full project, including sub-files, bibliographies and stylesheets therein. Clicking on these errors will direct you to the offending line in the LaTeX source. Texpad replaces LaTeX's obscure console output with a table of typesetting errors. When Texpad opens a document it scans through it, looking for LaTeX structure commands and any included files, then it presents you with an outline view with which you can swiftly navigate the entire project. Texpad is a LaTeX editor designed for straightforward navigation of projects of any size. Texpad 1.7.1 Multilangual | MacOSX | 23 MB |
